Description
Hello and Welcome!
I am currently filled until June, and looking for help from then on. Thank you for considering me.
I would like to say that I do have house rules, and really only need help from folks that are comfortable following them. They are as follows, and please forgive me if they are also how you operate. Shoes and dirty clothes changed after working outside. Meal-prep, cooking and dishes are separate from work hours but sharing is encouraged. Kitchen clean up right after use , and that includes cleaning table, counters, and sink. And a general pick up after yourself. Thanks for considering this.
I am currently seeking help in path building in the gardens for easier access ,hoping for help in the forest garden, and building a composting toilet this summer. This is in addition for the regular gardening work.
There is a bountiful organic garden that produces most of the food that we eat, and I also wildcraft. I have been working on this beautiful piece of land for more than 45 plus years, growing food and medicine plants. I make plant medicine and save seeds. I have been trying to naturalize as many of these plants as possible. I am also trying to set the gardens up so that they are easy to work in. This is a 30 acre parcel with a large creek cutting through it, and is mostly wild land, south facing, a quarter way up the mountain. Great water, awesome views, lot's of birds and pollinators. I am a dedicated organic grower and am trying to learn from, and work with, Nature's systems. I have also had a very long term involvement in social and environmental justice movements. I am sharing this land with many of my family members.
We live outside of Balfour, near Kootenay Lake and a half-hour drive from the culturally vibrant city of Nelson. There is a bus system to Nelson and the surrounding area and the longest free ferry boat ride in the country within walking distance.
I am a wildcrafter, and have enjoyed teaching others, both formally and informally. Learn about sustainable living, how to grow and put up food for the winter. You will have the opportunity to harvest and process medicinal plants and to create oils, tinctures, teas, salves and creams. Learn to identify wild edible plants and eat fresh organic food directly from the garden. I have a very interesting, wide and varied library and love sharing stories. In addition, you will have the opportunity to participate in the cultural life of the West Kootenays, known for world famous music festivals, a vibrant arts scene, and multiple recreation opportunities including wilderness hiking and access to beautiful lakes and rivers.
This situation would be ideal for people who are able to work both with me, and independently. There is a room with a queen-sized bed, so couples are welcome, a bedroom for a single, and there is an outdoor bedroom as well.Types of help and learning opportunities
